Twenty Decorative Carving Projects in Period Styles Steve Bisco 9781861086945 Books
This excellent work by Steve Bisco is a book of woodcarving projects that cover a range from novice to advanced. Some of the projects will allow a new carver to get started on something simple. Other projects are more complex and challenging. As the title indicates, the projects range in a series of periods. The first part of the book discusses general tool requirements and a quick primer of period styles. Then you are off to the projects. Each project includes a pattern, a specific list of tools used on that project, and LOADS of pictures with captions that detail the progression of steps in the project. Each project concludes with suggestions for finishing the carving, often more than one. The Style periods are scattered across the 20 projects and begin with the Dark Ages and progresses to the Edwardian. The bulk of the projects lie in the Georgian and Victorian style (AWESOME). I was really impressed with the layout of the individual projects. I have only had the book for about a week, so I have not done any of the carvings yet, but I am confident that I will be able to complete any of the projects at my skill level without issue.I bought my copy in the dark hoping to find something of use. I really like the Amazon reviews that at least let you "Look Inside" to the table of contents. I didn't get that for this one. So, I will provide that for others here:
1 Celtic Cross
2 Heraldic Shield
3 Tudor Linenfold Panel
4 Arts and Crafts Flower Panel
5 Holker Olive Panel
6 Renaissance Oak Panel
7 Gothic Window
8 The Peacock of Riga
9 The Dragon of Eye (carving on the cover)
10 St Ives Foliage Panel
11 Pugin Column table
12 Fruit and Flower festoon
13 Acanthus Swirl
14 Acanthus Cresting
15 Chippendale Ribbon Festoon
16 Rococo Mirror Frame
17 Georgian Corbel
18 Dolphin Tazza
19 Large-scale Arabesque
20 Grinling Gibbons Foliage
To summarize, I think the author did a fantastic job producing a work that will guide carvers of any level through period carvings. I am thrilled with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone interested in period carvings. Six Stars (if they'd let me...)

Twenty Decorative Carving Projects in Period Styles Steve Bisco 9781861086945 Books Reviews
I love reading books, articles and any other material about my hobby. may not be for everyone. Allows good practice for me
Most carving books are at the beginner to intermediate level. This book has something for carvers at every level, even if you just want to look at the pictures. Worth every penny.
Decorative carving is my favorite style, and the examples in Bisco's book are just what I like to carve. Excellent patterns, step-by-step instruction, and photos. The projects build in complexity through the book, with some really challenging projects toward the end. I just finished the St. Ives foliage and have prepared the blank for the Dragon.
Helpful illustrations, patterns, and carving instructions that are good training for any carver. I recommend for any carver below that of professional or highly experienced.
It is not going to win any grand awards....(as far as I'm concerned...maybe it has and I don't know it... if so , please forgive...).... but it gives you what you want on this subject. Clear, concise and to the point. Photos are pretty good but could have been bigger and a touch clearer... not a really great complaint over-all. I'm glad I made the purchase.
I have many carving books, and this is among my favorites. It has some amazing carving projects in it, including how to do some pretty advanced stuff, like Rococo style and even Grinling Gibbons style wall decoration. It's written from a British perspective, and seems to have been written primarily for a British audience as it focuses on their local history. Regardless, it's a GREAT book, and a must have for anyone considering decorative wood carving.
This is a great book for any wood carving skill level. While it's a general step by step that requires a little reading between the lines, the projects start out easy and increase in difficulty as you go. If you are looking for projects to increase your carving skill level, this book will help.
